The Emergency Medical Science – Occupational Extension is but one part of the larger EMS department here at GTCC. This department provides our community and students with a variety of emergency medical courses to include CPR, First Aid, Emergency Medical Technician and Tactical EMS. CPR & First Aid

Healthcare Provider CPR  is designed for those involved in healthcare or first response. Heartsaver CPR is designed for the general public. Cost for each course is $78.

NOTE: Students will not receive a confirmation of registration. If your form of payment is charged, the student is registered for the course.

Students are encouraged to purchase a student handbook for the appropriate class, available at the GTCC bookstore or online. Students will also be required to download a free app to their phones for use in class: QCPR Learner (Apple App Store, Google Play). Certification cards will be emailed to students within 21 days of class completion. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

  • Important: All students must bring a copy of their high school (or higher) diploma, GED, or CASUS Reading Assessment results (score grade 11 or higher), and a valid driver's license to the first class meeting.
  • Required Textbook: "Emergency Care," 14th Edition (ISBN: 9780136681168), $111.99. Can only be purchased from Pearson Publishing. Students are encouraged to purchase the book two weeks before the class start date. (An electronic version of the book is acceptable). 
  • Required EMS Testing: $52. EMT – platinumplanner.com.

Information about EMT course schedules, clinicals, EMS testing, etc., will be given to the student on the first day of class. No information will be emailed to the student before the start of the course.

Fee-Waived Eligible Students:

Students currently affiliated as an employee or volunteer with a state, county, or municipal public safety agency in one of the following job classifications may be eligible for a waiver of the registration fee. Please complete the Public Safety Continuing Education Registration Form. Please contact the EMS Department at 336-334-4822, ext. 50470 with questions.

Tactical EMS Course

Pre-Requisites: Current NC EMT or NREMT, AEMT, or Paramedic credential; letter from EMS or Law Enforcement Agency stating that the student is or will be part of a tactical team. Must be able to meet NC Police Officer Physical Abilities Test (POPAT) standards.
Required Materials: Student must bring their own firearms and tactical kit. GTCC EMS Program will only supply 9mm and .556 ammunition.

The goal of this program is to prepare Paramedics who are competent in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains to enter the profession.

Paramedic Program Outcomes

CAAHEP Accredited Paramedic Programs and CoAEMSP Letter of Review (LoR) Programs track and report outcome measures annually to the Committee on Accreditation for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).

  • The most current CoAEMSP Annual Report was for the calendar year 2021.
  • The most recent success rate for the North Carolina state cognitive exam was 100%.
  • The most recent positive placement rate for graduates was 100%.
  • The most recent retention rate was 62.5%.

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) – Refresher

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) refresher course is for currently credentialed or recently expired EMTs who require continuing education for re-credentialing.

This course is not a substitute for initial EMT education.

This course will be offered in a hybrid format as the student will only be required to come to the Jamestown campus for three days. The EMT refresher course meets all National Registry and North Carolina Office of EMS standards and consists of 80 total hours.

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) – Continuing Education

GTCC is offering online continuing education for Emergency Medical Technicians. This education will be offered in module format each semester. The student will be required to complete all quizzes for each module offered to receive credit.

Prerequisite: All students must possess a current National Registry or North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) credential.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course is designed to train individuals to become emergency medical personnel. Students learn about emergency patient care in both classroom lectures and hands-on laboratory simulations.

Topics include:

  • Patient assessment
  • Basic life support techniques, including airway management and CPR
  • Oxygen therapy
  • Treatment of shock
  • Treatment of fractures
  • Management of medical emergencies
  • Emergency childbirth

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be eligible to take the North Carolina and/or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician credential exam (additional cost).

All EMT courses require a minimum of 36 clinical hours, which occur in addition to and outside of scheduled class hours.

Though having a medical background before enrolling in any Emergency Medical Science class could only help, it is not necessary to have previous medical experience. You will learn what you need during the course.

The North Carolina Office of EMS requires that all EMT students provide one of the following:

  • Proof of high school or higher graduation in the form of a photocopy of the student's high school diploma, GED, or post-secondary degree
    OR
  • TABE reading assessment scores of grade equivalent 11 or higher. The TABE is administered in the GTCC EMS Program office at no cost. 

Requirements:

  • All EMT students must have a valid driver's license and show proof on the first day of class.
  • All EMT students must bring this documentation to the first day of class. Failure to provide this required documentation will result in the student being dropped from the course.
  • All EMT students must be 17 years old on or before the end date of the course.

The cost for the CPR courses are:

Please note that the NCOEMS and National Registry EMT credential exam fees are not included in the price of this course.

 

The cost for the EMT Continuing Education courses:

Registration fee (if not fee waived): $78 per semester course

We offer EMT classes each semester: spring, summer, and fall.

Typically, we offer three schedules at different GTCC campuses:

  • Two or three weekday evenings and every other Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Every Saturday 8 a.m.-5 p.m. with weekly online assignments
  • Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The duration of each class varies based on the number of hours the class meets each week. All classes are approximately 244 hours, including clinicals.

Typically, classes take one semester to complete – approximately 16 weeks.
